About this reconstruction

Built from the surviving film, photographs and the 1920 property map. The road, bleachers, pit tents and advertising bridge are supported by period evidence.

Dimensions, colors and exact positions are estimates. The church and school identifications are probable. The lineup now follows the original photograph; faces and exact machine specifications remain interpretations. This models the start complex, not the entire race course.

Whole-site detail: ten canvas shelters, equipped workbenches, floor pumps, toolboxes, buckets and generic V-twins. In view 7, two anonymous mechanics service a motorcycle beside a laid-out tool roll, parts tray and wiping cloths. The middle shelter has softer folds, stitched hems and a small repair patch. Canvas forms follow the film; the repair action, people, tools, fabric wear and their arrangement are illustrative.

Building exteriors: clapboards, foundations, individual shingles, sash windows, paneled doors, stoops and chimneys keep the established footprint hypotheses. Construction details are conjectural, with no invented identity signs, steeple or interiors.

Crowd barrier: the original panorama and film at 2:42 show a low post-and-rail fence with wire infill. An additional 87 bays now continue both verges beyond the Splitdorf bridge and down the south approach. Alignment, endpoints, wire spacing, timber, fixings and access breaks are illustrative. The track, lineup, crossroads and bridge stairs stay clear.

People: 826 seated figures and 175 standing spectators and crew retain the illustrative crowd. The lineup is corrected to the eighteen riders visible in the original panorama. Shaped faces, fingers, clothing, cap seams, boots and varied poses add craft, not recovered identities. Twenty-one people lean at the rail. These are not reconstructed portraits or a verified overall attendance count.

Beyond Splitdorf: 234 additional spectators watch from the rail, gather beside the touring cars and stand under the trees. The earlier 22 car-side figures now stand behind the fence. The supplied race view and website archive photograph guide crowd density and the shaded/open contrast; individual poses and counts remain illustrative. The road, junction and access gaps stay clear. View 29 brings these car-side groups closer.

Grandstands: all six timber bays retain individual boards, braces, fasteners and access aisles. The crowd and rail can be inspected separately by hiding Spectators & crews.

Splitdorf sign: the main heading is readable in the source. Its lettering, fabric, seams and fixings are approximations; uncertain smaller copy is omitted. Bridge planking, bolts and footings are interpretive construction.

Vintage advertising: the film’s victory sequence shows a Goodyear welcome banner on the light-sided building, plus nearby Harley-Davidson and Goodyear/Tires panels. The new signs follow those words and compositions. Their school-area placement is approximate; cloth, typography, subdued colors, stitching and mountings are interpretations. Illegible secondary copy is omitted.

The website’s original panorama and scoreboard photo were checked against the film. Retrospective 1919/1920 team posters and 1920 tickets are not presented as 1919 trackside signs. See the original film’s victory sequence ↗

Lineup: all eighteen visible plates are now shown in photographic order, including the overlapping 14 and 17. Indian script, Harley/Davidson lettering, X-emblem chest bands and plain jerseys follow the source. Folded arms, hands at waist, a forward lean, bare heads, caps, goggles and pale cloths distinguish the riders. Three source-guided machine families have narrow crossed-spoke wheels, sprung forks, long tanks, exposed finned engines, chains, controls and saddles. Exact individual models, facial likenesses, dimensions and colors remain unverified. This is the posed photograph, not a painted racing grid. Compare the original film’s lineup ↗

Cars: the school-opposite touring-car row follows the original footage at 2:15. Twenty-two cars on that verge and twenty-two behind the grandstands have detailed wheels, grilles, lamps, interiors and fine hardware. Count, colors, spacing and identities are not verified.

Northern distance: the supplied north-looking image and the website archive copy guide the low gabled buildings beyond the grandstands, farther pale house and layered tree line. The five building volumes are unidentified, not new school or church identifications. Dimensions, placement, colors and unseen construction are estimates. View 28 uses these separate depths for a long perspective; the existing posed lineup stays intact.

Landscape: the earlier approach trees remain, with 22 strengthening the shaded eastern side and six scattered beyond the parked cars. The southern distance adds 145 trees, bringing the current total to 399. The northern wooded belts, 37 northern understory sections, school-side woodland and pit backdrop remain. The original field boundaries contain 7,472 corn plants with folded leaves, ears and tassels, surrounded by grasses, stones, shrubs and wire fencing. Species, crop maturity, exact planting and positions are not recovered facts.

Dirt track: generated soil grain, uneven compacted patches, dusty areas and broken wheel paths replace the uniform surface. Shallow relief and loose mineral chips add detail from the lineup through both approaches and the crossroads. The riders’ boot and tire contacts remain fixed. These textures and wear patterns are illustrative, not recovered road composition or surveyed ruts; no painted lanes are added. September clouds and warm light are atmospheric interpretation, not verified event weather. The GLB contains geometry and textures, not the procedural sky.

Firestone scoreboard: the original photograph and supplied restoration guide the large painted board, outlined lettering, two rows of number cards, platform officials, ladder and scoring activity. Its exact historical location is unknown: view 30 uses a provisional position beyond the pits. Dimensions, colors, rear construction and the 24 anonymous officials and workers are illustrative. The restored number-card display is not a verified historical lap state; illegible notice writing is left blank.

Version 19 brings leafy branch silhouettes, softer anonymous faces and cloth folds, held programs, textured timber and canvas, leather grain, dull metal, vehicle wear, seat details and transparent windscreens. Loose stones and interrupted footprint impressions enrich the road shoulders. Sky reflections, leaf-filtered shadows and gentle distance haze add depth. These fine details are artistic interpretation, not newly recovered evidence; every earlier viewpoint and the photographed lineup order remain.

Southern distance: view 31 looks behind the bridge along a continuous dirt road into fields, 145 additional trees and 42 understory sections. Near, middle and far woodland create depth; the former study boundary no longer ends at an empty horizon. This background is an illustrative continuation, not surveyed geography or a verified stretch of the course. No new buildings or course turns are asserted. All thirty earlier viewpoints and the foreground remain unchanged.

Foreground craft: six central riders have continuous, sloping shoulders, fitted original jersey lettering and sculpted facial planes. Three riders’ fingers wrap around their handlebar grips. Plate 8 has bowed control cables, ferrules, radiused inspection covers, plug fittings, filler-cap knurling and small saddle and fork fixings. Views 24 and 25 bring these refinements closer. The photographed numbers, poses, headwear, lineup order and all 31 cameras remain. Fine anatomy and hidden hardware are artistic interpretations, not recovered likenesses or verified machine specifications.

Film-guided additions: eighteen touring motorcycles, including six parked sidecar combinations, gather beneath the trees (00:27). Forty-six additional cars continue the distant row (02:15), and twenty-six trees bring shade closer to the eastern rail—left when looking south (05:15). The running strip is now an estimated 8.4 m wide within a 13.2 m dirt corridor, with rough grassy margins; the photographed eighteen-machine lineup keeps its wider apron. These dimensions and exact placements are interpretive, not surveyed.

View 33 presents an occupied officials’ sidecar ahead of the lineup. The earlier title names Chairman Parsons, Starter Sullivan and R.H. Sturm; the 03:20 title identifies Sullivan as the pacer. The two figures are anonymous, and this display position is not asserted as the location of the filmed pacing sequence. View 34 corrects the visible lettering to “GOODYEAR / TIRES & TUBES” and refines the adjacent Harley-Davidson panel from 07:48–07:49. Paint colors and typeface details remain approximations.
